Excerpt:

Jaye was struggling out of a pile of bodies, untangling himself from severed limbs and rotted fabric. They hauled him upright. In the waning light, the shadows were deep under his eyes. “What happened?” Nonhle asked. “What was that?”

There was a chuckle from above them that reverberated off the walls. Nonhle flinched.

I happened.

A dark shape detached itself from the ceiling and landed on the stone floor, feather-light. Kerrith’s form was fading into shadow, her edges transparent, but her pale bulk still frighteningly large. She blinked all three burning eyes at them. I was called to become, and so I did. The Bright who was here has been torn from his moorings, and is fled. Carrion will not walk here again.
