(My parents have been here this weekend, so I don’t have anything new to report. To make up for it, have the first in a series of character profiles for The Phoenix Crown.)

Shakira Caine, who looks very much like I imagine Lynnis does

“And yet you do not flinch. Interesting. As it happens, I am in the market for an heir-presumptive.” The Queen’s eyes were cold, and the uneasy feeling in Nonhle’s gut coalesced into fear. “And I need a distraction for the Prince Consort. You will do nicely.”

Queen Lynnis of Matinne is one of three central background characters of The Phoenix Crown.  The daughter of a a mummer (an actor), she took her father’s lessons about drama to heart when she launched her bid for the crown.  She was a fleshmaga of rare power, capable of healing wounds and illnesses that most magi could not touch–but the healing would only hold so long as she was not betrayed.

She played a very long game indeed, and even after her husband, the Prince consort Marathey, betrayed her and had her killed, her plans continued to play out.

Never underestimate the Phoenix Queen, even after you think she is safely dead.
